Controlled scientific research`s results did not confirm a popular
opinion stating that hypoxia is a main reason of premature babies` white matter`s
lesion.

 

 

Received data testify that infection plays significantly bigger role in
appearance of periventricular leukomalacia, than hypoxia. It is known that it is periventricular leukomalacia that is the most frequent
form of
premature babies` white matter`s lesion, which is a predecessor of infantile cerebral paralysis.
Doctors consider that scientists should concentrate on prophylaxis, treatment
and diagnostics of pre-natal nervous system infections, to reduce number of infantile cerebral paralysis
cases.

 

 
Investigation of 150 babies, born in the age of 23-24 weeks, who
suffered from periventricular leukomalacia, allowed to find hypoxia phenomenon
only in 3-6% of cases (3% in a control group). At the same time, positive
results of a baby`s bacteriological blood test
increased probability of leukomalacia twice, and positive results of spinal
or tracheal fluid test three times.

 

 
Scientists consider that steroids should be taken during an ante-natal
period, to reduce systemic inflammatory responses, connected with
infection. This contributes to reduction of intensity
of cytokines pathological effects on developing brain oligodendrocytes.
