So, you’re pregnant... There’s a stable image of an ideal woman, who is filled with joy at the news that she will become a mother. Her pregnancy passes in dreams about her future baby. When a baby is born, she takes maternity with lightness and joy. There’s an element of truth in this picture – sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller. But, anyway, this is only one side of the medal. Medical researches showed (and wise women always knew this), that hostile feelings are also connected with pregnancy, which are absolutely normal and natural, especially while first pregnancy.

First pregnancy means ending of careless youth to some degree. A woman understands that after childbirth her gaiety will be very limited. She won’t be able to go out and come back whenever she wants anymore. It will be necessary to plan previous budget for another person. Her husband’s attention, which earlier belonged only to her, will belong to two people. Every new pregnancy is taken differently. Expected changes do not depress you so much, if this is your third or fourth pregnancy. But even the best mother, while any pregnancy, sometimes has contradictory feelings. There may be some external reasons for it: probably, pregnancy came too soon after previous one or some of parents is seriously ill, or there’s no mutual consent between a couple. However, such attitude to pregnancy can appear without any obvious reasons.
The first thing, which you will most likely face – is toxicosis. It can appear already several days after conception, when you don’t even suppose you’re pregnant. So, if you feel sickness, tiredness or an inexplicable wish to eat some unusual product for you, don’t hurry to stuff yourself with medicines, but better buy a pregnancy test in a drug-store and in case of positive result, use following advices. Some general unpleasant sensations, appearing during pregnancy, can be relieved by simple remedies.
Sickness and vomiting. You can exclude this symptom with help of frequent eating in small quantities, light gymnastics and herbal infusions, for example, mint. Vitamin B6 helps some women. But none of these medicines is safe. There’s only one consolation – women, suffering from sickness, have miscarriages rarer.
Stretch marks. About 50% of women have stretch marks. It is considered, that their appearance is connected with a level of collagen, contained in conjunctive tissues. To prevent stretch marks, they sell various creams, but none of them can be considered really efficient. Some women take vitamin E in capsules and rub oil in areas of stretch marks before and after childbirth. As a rule, stretch marks after childbirth dissapear by themselves, regardless of whether you cure them or not.
Tiredness. A good reason underlies in this discomfort. This way organism tells you that you need to have more rest, until a baby is growing inside of you. Have your sleep out, eat well, take vitamins and exercise. (These measures will help to prevent other troubles too). Walking and yoga exercising for pregnant women are very wholesome. If tiredness does not dissapear, think about earlier going to maternity leave or working part-time.
Tics in legs. Some doctors recommend taking calcuim and magnesium preparations to remove them. Reduce consumption of caffeine, as it can cause an “asleep legs” syndrome, when you go to bed.
You can also reduce discomforts of pregnancy with help of correct, full-value nutrition, as many of them appear right because of the fact that a re-forming organism feels lack of vitamins or microelements. And nature is arranged the way that firstly all necessary products come to a fetus, and then rest of them pass to a mother. So, an increased necesity in nutrition during pregnancy is undoubted. Pregnancy leads to approximately 11 kg of weight gain during whole period on average. Optimal body weight gain is 230-460 g per week. However, you should note, that a pregnant woman with significantly lowered body weight can gain more than 11 kg without any harm for her health, while a full slow-moving woman should not increase her excessive body weight on 11 kg, so an individual approach to a pregnant woman’s diet is necessary. Calorie content of food and body weight gain or loss correlate between each other.
Adequacy of consumption of food with certain quantity of calories can be valued depending on body weight change. Malnutrition of a pregnant woman (low Hb level or hypoproteinemia) is a reason, contributing to pathologic bleeding and spontaneous premature birth. Pregnant women with deficient body weight – this is a category of women, who run a higher risk of premature birth. Preeclampsia and eclampsia are probably partially a result of malnutrition, most likely – albuminous. Previous opinion, saying that fetus growth can be satisfactory, regardless of a mother’s body weight loss, is disproved now scientifically. Mother’s and fetus’s health mostly depends on quality and less on quantity of food she eats. It’s known, that according to a standard, fetus’s weight doubles during following two months of pregnancy. This weight increase can be reduced significantly while hungry diet.
A pregnant woman’s full-value nutrition has more important meaning for fetus’s growth and development, than nutrition of a breasfeeding woman for growth and development of a new-born.
Pregnant women should increase food calorie content on 300 kilocalories (in comparison with non-pregnant), taking of optimal doses of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and 16 other food components (vitamins А, D, Е, С, group B, folacyn, nicotinic acid, calcium, phosphorus, iodine, iron, magnesium, zinc).
Attaching big importance to proteins in a pregnancy anabolism, importance of carbohydrates and fats while excessive body weight loss is often unappreciated. It’s known that lack of proteins can develop even while sufficient coming of protein, if food calorie content is lowered, as most part of amino acids will be deamidated to cover energetic needs. Brief half-starvation (less than 1500 kilocalories) can cause reduction of quantity of proteins, ferments and even hormones in organism. If a starvation longs for several weeks or months, accumulation of liquid and increase of body weight take place, what can be interpreted by a doctor wrongly and entail prescription of a stricter diet.
It’s rather difficult to provide pregnant women with full-value nutrition. Lack of knowledge, general culture, upbringing, money etc. – are reasons of the fact that a pregnant woman receives not enough well-balanced food, rich in proteins, vitamins and mineral substances. Qauntity of foods, containing carbohydrates (especially digestible), should be restricted. Here’s a list and quantity of general foods during pregnancy and lactation per day:
4 glasses (or more) of milk (any);
two eggs;
one or two portions of fish, liver, chicken, lean meat or any cheese;
one or two portions of fresh vegetables (green) – turnip, lettuce, cabbage;
two or three pieces of bread;
one orange (grapefruit), lemon or a glass of juice of these citruses;
one portion of margarine, enriched with vitamin A.
During pregnancy and lactation pregnant woman should eat
A portion of porridge (millet, wheat, semolina or oatmeal), 4 times per week;
Yellow or red vegetables (turnip, beet and others), 5 times per week;
Liver – once a week;
Potato baked in its jacket – 3 times per week.
An opinion that excess of kitchen salt in food contributes to development of toxicosis is disproved nowadays. If you eat full-value food, especially enough quantity of proteins, then sodions will be neutralized.
A pregnant woman’s malnutrition can cause a birth of a baby with lowered body weight or motormental retardation.
Sparing diet for pregnant women, directed on improvement of quiality of nutrition, not on increase of calorie content, is necessary for fetus, to limit its sizes and prevent danger of birth trauma.
So, you eat well, exercise, walk, breathe fresh air, your future baby is developing wonderfully and suddenly... a doctor says that you need to be careful, you have a threatening miscarriage. Of course, they will send you to a hospital in case of emergency, but if risk is not so high, then they will prescribe you a course of treatment at home. Then there’s sense to talk about massage with your doctor. You know, you may have allergy for medicines (if there’re other restrictions and contra-indications) or side effects, and massage can help to cure many diseases.
Massage, wholesome for fetus. A woman is lying on her back, her eyes are closed, she’s relaxed.
Rubbing in belly area, affecting fetus positively. Put both thumbs on a navel, and stretch other fingers along both sides of belly, so that they would be in a massaging area, then do rubbing from middle of belly to its edges; in the end do rubbing in back direction, to a navel, with crossing motions of both palms.
Light touches of belly to prevent miscarriage. Cover a navel with one hand  and do linear strokes (with one finger) and rubbing until a sense of painfullness dissapears; in the end put a palm on a navel and do light touches straightly up. Repeat until you feel a sense of warmth.
