Researchers
from University of Florida discovered a connection between morbid
obesity in small children and imbecility, similar to those, which
presents in people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Although immediate cause wasn`t discovered, scientists suppose,
that metabolic imbalance affects children brain negatively, as it is
still developing and subjected to harmful influence.

Scientists detected intelligence in children and adults in their research.

People from one group suffered from Prader-Willi syndrome (genetic
defect, characterized by unceasing uncontrolled eating; appears in
early age), people from other group suffered from early obesity
(without known genetic reasons), displayed in weight gain up to 150%
until the age of 4 years, the third - control group - consisted of
probationers` brothers and sisters (who live in same social and
economic conditions with relatives).

After researchers compared results, they were quite surprised,
having known, that IQ of probationers, suffering from obesity, was
63-78, while their brothers` and sisters` IQ was on average 106.

Using MR-imaging, researchers found defects in areas, containing
white matter, in both groups of probationers with obesity. Scientists
noted, that this pathology has the same character while Alzheimer’s
disease and phenylketonuria.

These defects can be responsible for search for food. But,
according to scientists, it`s more probable that they appear as a
result of metabolic changes, damaging developing brain.

Doctor Merlin G. Butler, professor of University of Missouri,
commented this research, calling this work very interesting anf said
that it opens “a new era of researches”.

Telling about results, scientists say, that intellectual defects are
not observed in children and adults, who started suffering from obesity
in later age. The matter is that their brain is developed enough and
can resist to such influences.
