It`sknown that one of most popular reasons, according to which pediatrists
prescribe antibiotics for babies, - are ear infections (for example,
acute ear). But in recent time more and more people avoid excessive
usage of antibiotics because of side effects of such treatment.
There`re lots of facts telling about successful recovery of babies with
ear infections without additional treatment, and on the grounds of
these facts doctors worked out practice of “watchful waiting”.
development without medicinal treatment, if it is taking its normal
course. For example, since 2004 American Academy of Pediatrics and
American Academy of Family Physicians recommends to use “watchful
waiting” in case of moderate ear pain without great elevation of
temperature and complications for kids from 2 years. This prescription
has a special meaning in case, when a doctor is assured in worsening of
baby state while intensive care.
collegues from Children’s Hospital Boston published results of the
research, where they investigated attitude to such practice from the
side of doctors and parents, in June number of Pediatrics. More than
2000 of married couples, pediatrists and family doctors esteemed
popularity of “watchful waiting” method and its acceptability for
parents.
It was found out, that more than 63% of doctors use this method from
time to time, but only 6% resort to it systematically. Parents of
children, who passed treatment, more often feel discontent, if a doctor
prescribes this treatment (40%), than agree with a doctor (34%).
Application of method of “watchful waiting” is usually sanctioned by
people with good education, having certain knowledge about antibiotics
or feeling themselves included in the process of making of medical
decisions.
Thus, for more efficient treatment of usual children`s diseases,
including ear infections, it`s necessary to provide closer interaction
between a doctor and parents, and also help parents to know more about
methods of their children treatment.
