Why your baby is crying?

A joyous event took place in your family – a long-awaited baby was born! A happy father meets a smiling mother at maternity hospital’s doors, she’s holding a bundle in her arms.... And finally, the whole family is at home. Months of agonizing suspense and severities of delivery are left behind...

However, the following day new problems appear. A new family member behaves unexpectedly. Parents ask themselves a question all the time: how to determine reasons for baby’s crying? Is he hungry or his does stomach ache? May be, he is hot or cold? And may be he’s sick?

What to do, how to calm down a baby? Is it necessary to nurse him every time he cries?

Of course, no! Every mother begins feeling what her baby needs at this moment with time. Most sensitive and careful fathers also can reach mutual understanding with a baby. But usually mother spends much more time with her baby, moreover, she nurses him, and this establishes an absolutely special contact between them.

However, it takes some time to establish such contact. Usually this happens when a baby reaches 3 months. That’s why 3rd month of baby’s life seems significantly easier for parents, than first two ones.

During first days and weeks mother and newborn baby are getting used to each other. A careful mother is learning to understand and react to signals her baby gives. With every new day she needs less and less time to identify and interpret these signals. And baby becomes calmer and cries less, when he sees he’s undertstood.

Certainly, every baby is individual. And still there’s a number of general principles, which help you to determine what your baby needs this time. During first time, while mother is just learning to understand her baby, knowledge of these nuances is especially actual.

It’s easy to understand when a baby is crying because of hunger. To make sure of it, it’s enough to touch a corner of baby’s mouth with a bended little finger – if a newborn turns his head and opens mouth at once – this means he;s hungry and you need to feed him.

If a baby is hot or cold – he will be whimpering constantly. In this case you need to touch his wrists – if they are cold, cover him better, if hot and sweaty – you should undress a baby. Babies bear overheating much worse, than supercooling, and you should always remember it while dressing your baby.

The most serious problem of first months are pains in stomach. Almost all families face this problem. The reason of these pains, which literally exhausts both baby and his parents, is in imperfection of baby’s alimentary canal, which only starts adjusting to its new role.

A baby is crying shrilly because of pain in stomach. His face becomes red, almost to blue colour. It’s almost impossible to mix this cry with some other.

Any remedy hardly can save baby from gripes for short period. Maternal breast sometimes helps, but if a fit happened shortly after nursing, you can’t count on this remedy too much.

A wind-outlet canal can help some babies. You can buy it in a drugstore. To carry out this procedure, you need to put your baby on side, insert a thin end of a canal (smeared with vaseline) in anus (about 1 cm), and put another one in a glass of water. If the reason is in wind, then soon you will see blebs. Sometimes this canal stimulates stool, what also brings relief to a baby.

However, you shouldn’t use a wind-outlet canal too often. If a baby suffers from frequent fits of pain, then you can try massage of belly, which also stimulates flatus. Massage is done through light press on belly around navel. Imagine a horseshoe on a belly, which ends are directed down. Motions of your hand should repeat this trajectory clockwise.

Erusting of air during and after nursing is a good preventive measure against flatulence. During a break, when you change breast, and after end of nursing hold your baby vertically on your shoulder for several minutes. This allows not only to prevent flatulence, but also erusting of milk, which many babies suffer from. However, to tell the truth, this measure also helps saving baby from pains in stomach not always.

If massage and canal don’t help, probably, reason of pain is not in wind. Try to put a baby on a warm heating pad (wrapped in a swaddling band) with his belly. However, heating pad should not be too hot.

Warm fennel tea or fennel water also help many babies.

So, you’ve tried all methods, and your precious baby is still crying. Then you just have to hope for time, which cures, as it’s known, and try to alleviate your baby’s sufferings. Hold him, dance with him. Waltz motions bring relief to some babies, others like something similar to march. Try different poses – hold a baby vertically, aflat, with his belly down. A position, when a baby’s head rests on your elbow’s bend, and your hand supports him under his belly, acting like a heating pad at the same time, helps a lot.

When your baby reaches 2 months, he gets a new reason for crying. Now your baby cries often, because he’s tired and cannot fall asleep by himself. He cannot relieve accumulated psychological tension without parents’ help yet. He needs maternal breast or smooth swinging in hands, or a song to calm down...

Don’t be afraid to spoil your baby, swing him, sing a lullaby for him. If a mother is calm, her baby is also calm and balanced. In a couple of months he will learn falling asleep by himself, and swinging won’t be necessary anymore. But for this he should be fully confident that his mother will always help him, when he feels bad, worried and anxied.

In the age of 3 months another trouble appears. A hungry baby stops suckling suddenly, and begins crying loudly. Mother often cannot understand the reason of such unexpected behavior. Most likely, that teething starts during this period, teeth will appear not soon, but they already let you know about themselves. This supposition is confirmed by the fact that right at 3 months age salivation increases, which causes a so called “salivary rash” – red spots around mouth.

How can you help your baby, if nursing pains him?

Try to nurse him in a black out, quiet room, nobody should interfere you. Sometimes you have to nurse a baby standing and swing him – smooth rhythmic motions calm a baby down. If he keeps refusing from suckling, walk, dance with him, until he calms down a little, and then put to breast again.

Don’t panic. The first thing that occurs to a mother in such situation – that her milk got out of order, became bitter, and a baby refuses from suckling finally. On no account yield to such spirits. An attentive mother will notice that baby’s crying accompanies not every nursing, but only some ones during a day, usually at the same time. This is  rare thing during night nursings. As a rule, this crisis lasts 2-3 weeks, and then dissapears completely.

We hope these advices will help you to overcome all troubles together with your baby and learn understanding each other.
