It is difficult to
say when one can bath his baby for the first time. Usually parents are advised
just wiping their baby, until cord falls off and place of peritomy heals up.
Some doctors doubt propriety of this advice, considering that bathing does not
increase danger of infection. Consult your doctor. Postpone bathing, if you
notice pus exuding from base of navel or an unpleasant scent coming from an umbilical

Think about appropriate
places for wiping. Bathroom or kitchen can be more comfortable for you. Room
should be warm, try to prevent draughts. Cut off your phone, to avoid leaving
your baby alone during calls. Firstly prepare all necessary things. You will

Although some babies like being naked, majority of
them does not like it; it`s better to take off all cloth, except swaddling bands,
and wrap a baby in a towel with a hood. Sit in an arm-chair, hold your baby on
your knees, put a basin on a table or place a baby on a table, putting a folded
thick towel under him, and stand near.
Open a baby`s head and face. Start wiping his face with
warm water, wipe area behind ears and wrinkles of a neck especially thoroughly.
If a baby skin is not sweaty and fat, clean water will be enough. Otherwise,
use baby bar.
Squeeze some warm water on a baby`s head, add some
baby shampoo and wipe upper part of head gently. Don`t be afraid of touching
fontanel. Rinse head above wash-bowl, dry in a hood of towel. During this
procedure a baby`s body is wrapped in a towel. Now close his head with a hood
and pass to body wiping.
Turn a baby, remove swaddling band and wash other
parts of body. Stretch arms and legs and wipe groin, knees, wrinkles on elbows,
where fat can be accumulated. Wipe area around navel with a piece of cotton,
moistened in spirit.
Turn a baby on his belly and wipe an area upper
buttocks and in places of swaddling band adhesion. You can raise his legs and
wipe lower part of back and buttocks, when a baby is lying on back. To prevent
baby from being cold or worrying, cover rest of his body during wiping of areas
that adjoin swaddling bands.
Wash privy parts. Pulls his legs apart, like a frog. If
it is a girl, open vulvar lips and wipe between them with a moistened cotton
ball carefully. You will notice that excretions are accumulated also between
vulva and external vulvar lips. You need to wash this area especially
thoroughly. Normal white vagina excretions are usually accumulated between
labia and vaginal orifice. You can leave them. If it is a boy, wipe wrinkles
between scrotum and skin of groin and buttocks, and also near penis base. Wash
if necessary. Don`t move aside foreskin, if it wasn`t ablated.
Wrap a baby in swaddling bands quickly and dress him
before he catches cold or begin worrying.
To wash a baby thoroughly and avoid any damage to him,
use a couple of old gloves, soaping them with baby bar. You will get bast whisps
that take the shape of a baby`s body and don`t reduce sliding of hands along
soaped skin.
Additional advices on wiping
When you pass from
wiping of one part of body to other, change parts of a rag, which you use for
wiping, so that you could use a clean part each time.
Remove moisture,
applying a dry cotton sheet, and dry skin finally with a towel gently, to avoid
any damage to delicate baby skin.
If a baby doesn`t like
wiping and bathing, do hygienic procedures in parts. Wipe areas, where there`re
more fatty excretions, sweat, dirt.
Wash eyes as needed, and
not only during regular wiping or bathing. Babies often object to this
procedure and can begin protesting against wiping and bathing.
Use cotton balls and tap
water (always squeeze several drops of water from a cotton ball on inner part
of your wrist, to check that water is not too hot). Remove excretions,
accumulated in eye corners.
You can make small
cotton wicks and clean areas behind ears and auricles with them, but you
shouldn`t try reaching acoustic duct, as you can damage ear-drum.
Bathing in a bath or basin
After wiping we go to real bathing. First of all, you
need to choose safe and comfortable place for bathing. There`re lots of special
baby basins in shops.
You can put a towel, folded in several layers, or a foam-rubber
rug on the bottom. There`re also inflatable baby basins. If you have a
throw-over tap, make sure that tube is turned not towards a baby.
Before you put a baby in water, make sure that water
is warm, not hot. Tie a towel around neck, to prevent you from getting wet and
in case of necessity to take a baby out and cuddle him. Many newborns do not
crave for bathing too much. Sing songs to your baby, look at his eyes, massage
gently during bathing - and he will relax.
Questions about bathing
How often should we bath a baby?
Bathing is mainly a game. A baby does not get dirty so
much, to be bathed every day. Good news for busy parents. Twice a week will be
quite enough (especially in winter), under condition, that you wipe a baby
every time he evacuates. It is necessary to wipe those parts of body, where
sweat, fat or dirt is accumulated, for example behind ears, in wrinkles of
neck, and also parts of body, adjoining swaddling bands, every day.
Which bar and shampoo to choose?
Baby skin, especially of a newborn, is very sensitive,
and all sorts of soap have light irritating quality. Meaning of soap - is to
switch all particles and grumous saccules to suspension, so that to remove
them from skin easily with water later. Without soap, dirt, fats and excretions
would just stick to skin, and you would have to rub skin violently to remove
them, what also causes its irritation. Any baby`s skin is individually
sensitive to soap. You will find out answers to questions about quantity of
soap, frequency of soaping and sort of soap to use only during your own
experience, however, there`re still some general rules, which will help you.
Use soap only on parts
of skin, rich in excretions, for example, fat or sweat, which are difficult to
rinse with clean water without skin rubbing.
While the first usage of
soap of some certain brand, try it on a small part of body. If skin becomes red
in several hours, shrink or change its appearance somehow, remove this soap and
try other one.
- Use soft soap. Special baby bar usually has less
antimicrobial, scented and other components.
- You shouldn`t leave soap on skin for longer, than 5
minutes, to prevent skin from drying and irritation.
- Don`t rub with a soaped mitten or rag too strong.
If your baby is subjected to eczema or suffers from allergic dermatitis,
use as little soap, as you can, and bath him less frequently. You can try soap,
made in a drugstore, according to a special dermatologist`s recipe. Babies with
very sensitive skin should stay in water during little time, it`s better to
wash them with a shower or wash in parts.
Shampoos are similar to soap: if you apply too much,
they can irritate skin of upper part of head and overdry hair. Use only baby
shampoo: like baby bar, they contain fewer additions. If a baby`s head is
covered with fatty scales (so-called cradle cap), rub vegetable oil in it
after washing to soften scales, and remove them with a soft comb.
Some more words about soap and shampoo. Some mothers,
sensitive to scents, consider that soap, shampoos and also scented oils and
powder spoil natural baby`s smell, irritating them. In their turn, mothers
should not use perfumes and other strongly scented cosmetics, which can
irritate a baby and spoil a mother`s natural scent, which is necessary for him.
Should we use powder and oils?
Time, when a baby was powdered with talc after each
bathing, has gone. You don`t need powders and oils, as your baby`s skin is
smeared with sebum naturally, and powders and oils can irritate it and even be
harmful. You can apply special baby oil only on areas of overdried skin, in
other cases there`s no such necessity. Powders are easily curdled, accumulated
in skin wrinkles and irritate it additionally, increasing diaper rash. Starch,
which is often recommended as a substitute for powder, can serve as a medium
for fungus propagation. Smallest particles of powder in the air can irritate
nasal passages and respiratory tract.
A baby is crying during bathing. What shall we do?
How to make bathing pleasant for both? If your baby is
crying every time you try putting him in water, this means, he`s either hungry,
or water is too hot or cold for him, or may be he doesn`t like sitting in water
alone, as he doesn`t feel it`s safe. Sit in bath together with your baby. Fill
it with water beforehand, let it be little colder, than usually. Undress
yourself and your baby. Cuddle him, when you go in water, then sit and enjoy
skin contact with water. If your baby is still protesting, do such thing:
firstly you sit down in a bath, showing that you like it a lot. Let someone of
your relatives give you a baby. Moms, don`t be surprised, if your baby wants
you to nurse him during this time. This is a natural reaction to your breast`s
closeness. If a baby is still moping, when he is sinking into water in your
arms, give him breast firstly, then go into a bath carefully with him and sink
in water with a suckling baby little by little. Doing this, you`ll receive
great pleasure.
Growing up, a baby will be able to entertain in a bath
with traditional inflatable toys. Don`t fall asleep! If you bath together with
your baby every time, don`t go out from a bath holding a baby. It`s safer to
give him to someone or put on a towel you prepared beforehand.
We are used to think that bathing is not only a hygienic
procedure, but a ritual of communication with a baby. In this case nothing
irritates you. Let baby bathing brings you joy, like any other communication.
